A Zebra and her stripes

This weekend was the perfect weather to visit Action Wildlife Preserve in Goshen, CT. It had been decades since I’ve been to this park so I’ve completely forgotten what it was like. It was a nice surprise and it felt like exploring something new. The preserve is massive, stretching father than I could see and beyond. The park was beautiful, easy to navigate and the animals were happy to see new 2-legged treat dispensers.

I had my trusty Canon R5 in hand with a 24mm F 1.8 Macro lens. Not ideal for this occasion as I would’ve preferred something longer and tighter for active wildlife but as one wise photographer said,“the your best lens is the lens you have”, so I got to work.

I did my best to navigate around the chain linked fences but they were sometimes unavoidable. The 24mm lens made the animals appear farther than they were so I had to think differently if I wanted some interesting shots. My first thought was to get as close as possible to take advantage of how wide the lens was. The animals were used to humans, so they were more than happy to oblige for some close ups until they realized I had nothing to offer and lost interest.

Everything changed when we arrived at the baby Zebra and donkey enclosure. The babies were curious and were fun playing with their food bowl. I was able to sneak a shot of the two of them muzzle to muzzle. I only wish I was lower to get a level view of their noses touching but the moment was ever so brief and I shoul be happy I captured that moment at all.

All in all I had a wonderful day. The weather and the sky were perfect and there was a constant breeze that makes you just feel alive. The animals were all to happy to have their pictures taken and I was happy to get some cute photographs.
